Young season

 Grey Wagtail, young and adult
As we saw in our previous birding tour, in the P.N. Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón Natural Reserve, the number of young birds is very striking, we can see many young birds of differents species, many of them still not far from their nests and fed by their parents, Shrikes, Wagtails, Finches, Sparrows ... In this great birding day with a good time of sun and clouds, but with some wind, we recorded a total of 51 species in just over four hours. One of the Red-backed Shrikes families, was one of the first family groups seen, other adults and their chicks were Grey Wagtail, Rock Sparrows, Stonechats, Sand Martin, Spotless Starling, Serin, ... Five species of raptors, Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Booted Eagle, Common Buzzard, Black Kite. Interesting behaviour of Common Redstart, using a clothesline like lookout post for hunting.

P.N. Alto Ebro Y Rudrón. Cliffs and plateaux areas.

 Cliffs of Tudanca
52 species confirming the variety of species that can be recorded in a simple four-hour day birding in the P.N. Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón Natural Reserve  in the region of Las Merindades. Again it is found that the breeding this year is quite normal, unlike last year which was really a bad breeding year. Many bird families, Finches, Chats, Sparrows, Crows are seen ...
We start prospecting in the surrounding area, checked in several species within Zamanzas Valley, Swifts and Martins in the villages, Thrushes, Shrikes, Pipits in the meadows and among the oaks of the forest resound Woodpeckers, Warblers and Pigeons.
In the plateaux, in small shrubs and stones become perching and breeding sites for Buntings and Wheatears, in villages and churches we find a small colonies of House and Rock Sparrows. In the sky, great movement of Swifts, Swallows and Martins (House, Crag and Sand).
With this route and thanking Jean and David his interest in birds of Burgos, we continued to collect data for the Atlas of Breeding Birds of Spain.

Birding in "Las Merindades"

Whinchat
A journal marked by records of prey and lots of family groups of birds, Stonechats, Linnets, White Storks ... Among the most remarcable records, highlight a by the rarity of this species in Burgos and its degree of threat in the whole of Spain and this is none other than the iconic Bonelli's Eagle.
So along with this, during the five-hour drive a total of 10 species of raptors, from Griffon Vultures abundant and resident throughout the all year to Merlin, summer visitor.
 Serin
Black Redstart
We started the day with one of the most characteristic species of the valley at this season, Red-backed Shrike, while in the meadows, Thrushes, Starlings, Pipits and Wagtails, among the forest areas .... singing Warblers, Wood Pigeon, Woodpeckers. The villages attract various birds, because that they find shelter and food.
Birding at Bricia region

 Common Buzzard
Griffon Vultures and Swifts are the protagonists in the canyons, while the Buntings, Chats and Finches are the most abundant on the plateaux.
We visited the colonies of White Stork, with some chicks of this year about to fly, others can already be seen accompanying their parents in nearby meadows.

The high water level continued existence in the Ebro reservoir prevents the settlement of the birds, and so we all season low records of species in this area.
Like other days, the recorded data will be part of the information to send to the development of the Atlas of Breeding Birds of Spain.

A total of 60 species, many of them first observation for these intrepid British birders.

Variedad de aves en Las Merindades

 Escribano Triguero

Birding days in Northern Burgos

 Stonechat

Two days of intense birding, although somewhat influenced by the wind , which has avoided seeing some species more quietly.
Yet the number of species recorded has been very good , 58 species on the first day and 72 the second , with a total of 82 species .
Many of the records will be part of the new Atlas of Breeding Birds of SEO/BirdLife. Over the next four years, our birding routes in spring will be part of this Atlas .
We toured the northern area of P.N. Cañones del Alto Ebro y Rudrón and the southeast area of Ebro water reservoir, cover a differences habitats, took us to go through several very different habitats, pastures, upland areas,  forests, villages and a large body of water.
Started with one of the species that later comes to their migration , the Red-backed Shrike , with very good distribution along the routes. Later we located the bigger of the European Shrikes , Southern Grey Shrike.

Red-backed Shrike

Undoubtedly, the most abundant species Stonechat and Corn Bunting .
Good records of raptors, Short-toed Eagle , Montagu's Harrier, Marsh Harrier and Vultures .
Several species of warblers , Blackcap and Bonelli's Warbler, as the most recorded. Finches mixed, Serin , Goldfinch , Greenfinch , Linnet ....
Aquatic species recorded in the Ebro water reservoir were not many, the high level of the reservoir (98 %) , avoid that appropriate shores for waders. Grebes , the group most represented with three species. We recorded a small group of 6 Spoonbills in breeding plumage , as always interesting and striking.
