Garceta Grande, record para Burgos.

La Garceta Grande (Egretta alba), una especie que en pocos años a pasado de registrar sólo observaciones accidentales a ser una especie de presencia regular en invierno en diversas localidades de toda la Península. Ya desde los años sesenta se han obtenido citas ,  pero como ejemplo, en el periodo 1981-1993  existan tan solo 36 registros en toda la península (Díaz, M. et al. Aves Ibéricas. No Paseriformes. 1996), y como ejemplo de este aumento de su invernada en la Península simplemente ver el Noticiario Ornitológico del Vol.60-1 de Ardeola en donde existe multitud de registros con algunos realmente llamativos, como las 49 aves de Extremadura.
En Burgos, el mayor registro hasta la fecha, según el Anuario Ornitológico de Burgos Vol.2, es de 8 aves en un censo de todo el Embalse, lo que presupone que había aves en Burgos y Cantabria. Por su parte, en Cantabria citan el el Anuario Ornitológico de Cantabria, 10 aves en el estuarios del Ansón.
Habitualmente el Embalse del Ebro es uno de los mejores lugares en Burgos para la invernada de esta especie, y últimamente se venian observando 5 o 6 ejemplares en la misma zona, pero hoy, con la observación de 13 aves en una sola localidad (San Vicente de Villamezán) constituye el mayor registro hasta la fecha de esta especie para Burgos y para el Embalse del Ebro en su conjunto. Esta aves se encontraban junto a 23 Espátulas, 25 Garzas Reales, 3 Garcetas Comunes, Gaviotas Reidores, Cormorán Grande...

Embalse del Ebro, migración

Durante estos primeros días de migración se ha podido registrar una buena entrada de aves en el Embalse del Ebro, masa de agua que ofrece descanso a numerosas especies en sus viajes migratorios, en este momento de migración hacia el sur. Ha destacado la presencia de Espátulas, posiblemente el mayor número del que se tiene registro, así como de Pato Colorado, este último recala año tras año en el Embalse para realizar la muda, por lo que es necesaria una buena dosis de tranquilidad, que cada vez resulta más complicada de encontrar. Las garzas están teniendo una buena representación, siendo la Garza Real de la que más ejemplares se pueden observar repartidos por todo el Embalse y convirtiéndose en la reinas del lugar, imponiendo su agresividad a otras Garzas, como la Garcetas Grandes, Garcetas comunes y Garcillas Bueyeras que completan el grupo de ardeidas del lugar, estas últimas haciendo honor a su nombre acompañando a vacas y caballos. Grupos de pequeñas aves principalmente de Alondras, Bisbitas, Collalbas y Fringílidos, sobrevuelan y se alimentan en los prados que rodean el Embalse, y son la base de la alimentación de otro asiduo del Embalse, el Gavilán. El último recorrido a la parte Burgalesa del Embalse del Ebro, zonas cercanas a las poblaciones de Concorte, Cabañas de Virtus y Arija, ha dado como resultado el registro de 46 especies.

MCBirding y el Gusanillo

Culebrera Europea, Garza Imperial, Mosquitero Musical, Andarrios Grande….especies de aves sin duda llamativas, singulares y de las que uno disfruta observándolas, pero esto e incluso otras observaciones pueden ser superadas por ver como un niño de siete años se agarra a unos prismáticos y una sencilla guía de aves, haciendo su primera lista de las aves con dibujos,  diferenciando las oídas de las vistas…un buen comienzo y que tiene pinta de continuar, esperamos que el gusanillo de la ornitología le haya entrado para nunca salir.

La ruta nos llevó a través del Valle de Zamanzas, con primeras buenas observaciones de, en este caso, un vuelo de la Culebrera Europea, que sin duda seguirá su camino hacia el sur en busca del estrecho de Gibraltar y África como último destino. Seguimos el río Ebro hacia la localidad de Tudanca, donde sólo las Lavanderas nos esperaban y durante parte del recorrido  se notaba la presencia de los siempre abundantes en estas fechas, Papamoscas Cerrojillos. Unos Ánades Reales nos recibieron en la balsa de riego de Dobro, junto con el incesante reclamo de los también presentes Papamoscas Cerrojillos, mezclando sus vuelos en busca de insectos con Mosquiteros Comunes y Musicales. Entre los carrizales, una Garza Imperial y una Real, alzan el vuelo para mostrar a Guille las claras diferencias entre la garza púrpura y la garza gris. También entre los carrizos resuena algún reclamo de Rascón, mientras un gran grupo de Aviones y Golondrinas se alimentan encima de ellos.

Trip by the county of Bricia and Southern area of water reservoir of river Ebro.

Little Owl, Buntings, Buzzards... in the moor of county of Bricia an highlands with 1000 meters above sea level.

In the water reservoir, Grey Heron, Great White Egret, flocks of Common Coot, Eurasian Curlew, Lapwing, Mallard.... all in the pasture, meadow areas and the areas of low level water. Yellow-legged Gull, Black-headed Gull, Cormorants and Grebes in the open water.

All with good weather and waiting the Spring.

Interesting first days of April in Burgos, apart from the arrival of numerous African Birds, there is a good number of birds records, especially remarkable, less common birds in Burgos, I put some for you.

A trip report

A good morning of birdwatching in the vicinity of the Inn, in the meadows fields to see Mistle Thrush searching earthworm, Robins, Common Chaffinch and Firecrest does not stop to sing from the Oaks.
Four Roe Deer leave running, while a Common Buzzard is thrown in search of its prey from a tree.
A Grey Heron on an unusual perching, at the top of a black poplar.
Stop to observe the rocky wall, locating to a precious female of Peregrine Falcon, a while a Short-toed Eagle flies over the zone to settle in a rocky one. Several Griffon Vultures settle and fly by the zone.

A flock of 36 Great Cormorants flying in formation towards the north.
In the bank of the river, among the alders and ashes, the Iberian Chiffchaff with its characteristic voice.
The Egyptian vultures, just arrived from Africa, with their spectacular plumage, emphasize among the Griffon Vultures. To far a Golden Eagle it flies near the cut ones, one settles in a dry tree and it allows us to observe it easily.

In the canyon of Orbaneja del Castillo they appear the Egyptian vultures again, several Black Kite and the omnipresent Griffon Vultures.
Wood Pigeon, Jackdaw, Yellowhammer.
Once again a Grey Heron surprises when being perching at the top of the rocky of the canyon of river Ebro.
Altogether 26 species of birds in a pretty morning of spring.

SACRE in Winter

This it is the first year that I realise the route for the new program for the follow-up of birds of SEO BirdLife, the follow-up of common birds in winter. (More here)
The squares it’s the same that I realise in spring, VN 4040.
The route is simple, and I have chosen to realise it by two zones easy to walk and very pretty, the pastures of the Valley of Zamanzas and the footpath GR 99 throughout the river Ebro.
In this zone the river Ebro has very well conserved banks, where the alders abound, ashs, poplars…
A good number of birds and species, 29, but certainly throughout the years this will change.

Here you have the relation of species seen in two hours:

Mallard, Grey Heron, Griffon Vulture, Common Buzzard, Common Kestrel, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Long-tailed Tit, Fieldfare, Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Blackbird, European Robin, Wren, European Serin, Eurasian Bullfinch, Hawfinch, Common Chaffinch, Eurasian Siskin , Green Woodpecker, Blackcap, White Wagtail, Dipper, Spotless Starling, Red-billed Chough, Carrion Crow, Jay, Eurasian Nuthatch, Wood Pigeon.

Hot Spot of River Ebro

These days the water reservoir of the river Ebro is a hot spot for birdwatching.

It is not difficult to make a route in a day and to see near 50 species of birds.

Some of them considered Rare Birds in Spain and very rare others in the north of the Iberian peninsula.

Waders, Herons, Gulls, but mainly birds of the Anatidae family.

Remarkable birds:

Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos).

There has been a great arrival from these birds to many places of Spain (to see analysis in Rare Birds in Spain Blog). A bird registered in the water reservoir.

Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca). A bird, although the presence of this species can indicate that it is of captivity, have already been several the homologations of this species in the peninsula.

Smew (Mergellus albellus). Another species of doubtful origin, with many possibilities of natural origin.

Red-knobbed coot (Fulica cristata). It is not the first registry in the north of Spain, before has been observed some bird in Galicia. But very rare bird in the north of spain.

Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea): Three spectacular birds. Birds of uncertain origin too.

Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina). 450 birds recorded near the village of Cabañas de Virtus.

Historically this water reservoir has been a place chosen by thousands of Red-crested Pochard as to moult site.

Without justified cause, for years, the number of Red-crested Pochard has been littler, years with only possible to find four or six birds.

We hope starting from this year, they return in great flocks.

Post-nuptial migration.

The post-nuptial migration has begun with force in the north of Spain. Great amount of birds to cross towards the south, Willow Warbler and Pied Flycatcher abound in all the areas.

Herons, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Night Heron is possible to find in many wetlands and rivers of the north of Spain.

Like other years, the Lammergeier has been recorder in the north of Burgos, in this case to only 15 km of the inn Molino of Canto Inn, in the village of Hoz de Arreba.

The water reservoir of the Ebro, have an abundant records of waders, spoonbills, ducks….

In the cereal plains of the province of Burgos many raptors, principally falcons, the first Hooby, Common Kestrel, Lesser Kestrel and Peregrine Falcon and a record of Imperial Eagle.

And in the Bay of Biscay, great passage of seabirds, with numerous records of interesting species, like Wilson's Storm-petrel and the four European Skuas.

Herons in migration

In these days that many birds are emigrating towards their breeding places , Burgos have seen themselves specially visited by several species of herons, the Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea)and most outstanding, Great Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), seen a bird the past day 15 in the gravel pit of Grijalba.

Night Heron

First record of Night Heron in the riverside of the Molino del Canto Inn.
It is the first time that I see this singular heron here.
Like show in the Yearbook of Birds of Burgos, it is a summer visitor, and he is safe that the bird see today is a migratory bird towards breeding areas.
